CPR and First Aid require strenuous physical activity and practice on both a partner and a manikin. New CPR standards and training techniques require prolonged kneeling and extended practice of rescue breaths and chest compressions!  If you have a medical condition or disability which could affect your participation in this training, please consult with your physician before registering. Successful skills practice is required for certification.

This course provides certification in First Aid only. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness (other than breathing and cardiac emergencies) until advanced medical help arrives. Certification is valid for 3 years. This course DOES NOT meet the State of Connecticut requirements for family and day care staff - see the Connecticut Childcare course, below.

This course teaches participants how to recognize and provide care for choking, breathing, and cardiac emergencies in infants and children; as well as injury prevention, emergency care, childhood illness and more. CPR certification is valid for 1 year. Connecticut Childcare certification is valid for 3 years. This course meets the State of Connecticut training requirements for family and day care staff.

Babysitter's Training   Watch the Babysitter's Training Overview
Fee $50.00
This course provides students with training in how to care for infants and young children in a home setting - including how to prevent injuries and what to do in an emergency. It includes a handbook, emergency guide and reference CD.
Prerequisite: Students must be 11 to 15 years of age.

Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission
Fee $Call

This course has been developed with guidance from the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to comply with the training component of OSHA’s bloodborne pathogen standard. Certification is valid for 1 year. On request, this course can also include information and materials useful in preparing for a flu pandemic.

Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT)
Fee: $40.00
This course is a prerequisite for all other instructor courses. It introduces instructor candidates to the history, structure, services, and policies/procedures of the American Red Cross and prepares instructor candidates to teach specialty courses to diverse student populations.

All instructor courses are held at the Waterbury Office.  PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. 

Registration Information
Pre–Registration is required. Registration for all classes is on a first come - first served basis.  Course fees listed are per person and are due at time of registration. You can register in person or through the mail by check, cash, money order, or credit card (Discover, MasterCard, or Visa). Course fees are generally non-refundable. However, if you notify the chapter at least three working days before the course, you may be able to transfer your enrollment to another scheduled course. If a class is canceled or rescheduled, the chapter will make a reasonable effort to notify you in advance. Any refunds issued will be minus textbook/postage charges (if applicable). 
Refunds or transfers will NOT be issued to students who fail to show up for class.

  • The American Red Cross follows Centers of Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for the cleaning and decontamination of manikins. According to the CDC there has never been a documented case of any infectious disease being transmitted through the use of CPR training manikins.

  • To receive course certification, you must attend all sessions and pass all skill tests and written exams. A minimum score of 80% is required on each section of written exams.

  • Courses are held at the chapter office indicated, unless otherwise noted. There will be a lunch break for classes that are scheduled for the entire day.

Complete the Registration Form and mail it to the appropriate chapter office (Waterbury  for classes at either the Naugatuck location or Waterbury office, or Torrington). Be sure to mark the outside of your envelope "Course Registration."
If you can't print the Registration Form, you may send your name, address, phone number, and desired course title, starting date, and location; along with a check/money order; or your Discover, MasterCard, or Visa credit card data (name of card holder, card number, expiration date, and signature) to the appropriate office.
