Health and Safety Course Descriptions

Following are the descriptions of the Health and Safety courses offered in southeastern Connecticut.

First Aid – CPR – AED Programs

Workplace Standard First Aid (WP/SFA)

Meets State of Connecticut requirements for school coaches.

Covers Adult CPR and First Aid. Optional modules that can be added are, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), Slips Trips & Falls, Ergonomics, Your Heart Matters, Back Injury Prevention, Managing Stress, & Workplace Violence Awareness. An Infant & Child CPR segment may also be added. This course also helps meet OSHA work site first aid training requirements. Students receive two certificates, a Adult CPR certificate (Good for 1 year) and a First Aid certificate (Good for 3 years) upon completion.

Community First Aid & Safety (CFA&S)

Meets State of Connecticut requirements for school coaches.

A comprehensive course that covers Adult, Infant and Child CPR and First Aid procedures. Learn when and how to use the emergency medical system, and how to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Optional modules that can be added as needed are, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), Slips Trips & Falls, Ergonomics, Your Heart Matters, Back Injury Prevention, Managing Stress, & Workplace Violence Awareness. This course helps meet OSHA work site first aid training requirements. Students receive two certificates, a CPR certificate (Good for 1 year) and a First Aid certificate (Good for 3 years) upon completion.

Adult CPR

Teaches Adult Rescue breathing, blocked airway and CPR skills. Students will also learn to recognize signs & symptoms of a heart attack and healthy living habits. Optional modules that can be added as needed are, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), Slips Trips & Falls, Ergonomics, Your Heart Matters, Back Injury Prevention, Managing Stress, & Workplace Violence Awareness.

Infant CPR

Teaches Infant Rescue breathing, blocked airway and CPR skills. Students will learn how to reduce the risk of injuries and how to activate the Emergency Medical System.

Child CPR

Teaches Child Rescue breathing, blocked airway and CPR skills. Students will learn how to reduce the risks of injuries at home and at school/play. They will also learn how to activate the Emergency Medical System.

Community CPR

Teaches Adult, Child, & Infant rescue breathing, blocked airway and CPR skills. Students will learn to recognize signs & symptoms of a heart attack and healthy living habits. Sport Safety Training (SST)

Designed for Coaches of Adult Athletes.

Teaches Adult rescue breathing, choking CPR and first aid skills. Students learn how to care for sports related first aid emergencies. They also learn what the coach’s responsibilities, how to identify and eliminate/minimize potentially hazardous conditions and how they impact injury prevention for at athletes. Upon completion students receive a 1 year CPR and 3 year Sport Safety certificate.

Basic Aid Training (BAT)

Designed for children from 8 – 10 years old.

Introduces children to safety information and first aid procedures for breathing difficulties, bleeding, poisoning, burns, shock, and other emergencies. Upon completion students receive a non-expiring certificate.

CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR/FPR)

Meets CPR requirements for Life-Guards

Teaches professional rescuers (those with a duty to respond) basic and advanced Adult, Child, Infant CPR & First Aid skills. Students also learn how the body systems function and the use of both resuscitation and bag-valve masks. A one year certificate is issued upon completion.

Automated External Defibrillation Essentials

Adult CPR a Prerequisite

Training includes what is an AED and how an AED works, the role of CPR in a Cardiac arrest, and how to use an AED in an emergency. Teaches individuals the skills and knowledge needed to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the safe use of an automated external defibrillator. A one year certificate is issued upon completion.

Health Care Programs

Connecticut Child Care

Meets the State of Connecticut requirements for Home Care & Day Care licensing

Teaches adults to administer First Aid and Infant/Child CPR, prevent accidents, and recognize communicable diseases in children. They learn to recognize the signs of child abuse and what steps to take in protecting the child and reporting procedures. They learn to develop an awareness of the needs of children & infants in their various stages of growth. Also appropriate for parents, grandparents, and child caregivers. Upon completion students receive a 1 year Infant & Child CPR and a 3 year Child Care Certificate.

Babysitting

Recommended for Individuals 11 to 15 Year olds.

The course includes instruction in critical first aid and problem solving skills when clear thinking can be difficult. It covers basic care routines like feeding, diapering, dressing, and preparing simple meals for infants and children as well as handling bedtime issues and choosing age appropriate toys and games. This training will help participants develop skills in five critical areas: leadership, safety, safe play, basic care, first aid, and professionalism. The course is designed to teach young people the best way to keep themselves and the children in their care safe. (Students receive a non-expiring certificate)

Aquatic Programs

Life-Guarding

Minimum age required (15)

Led by volunteer Aquatic & First Aid Experts, this course leads to Lifeguard Certification, Rescuer CPR, and Authorization to teach Basic First Aid.
