Steve Hill
was a longstanding volunteer at the New Canaan Red Cross.
After moving to New Canaan from Wilton, he became active in
the Chapter in 1989. Steve joined the board at that time and
served for six years. He was such a valuable member of our
board that he was asked to join again in 1998. As Chair in
2001, his guidance during 9/ll proved invaluable as we strived
to provide support to the victims. He served as the chair for
four years, which is much longer than we usually ask of a
volunteer. He also was a member of the statewide body and on
the Connecticut Regional Blood Services board.
A Midwest
native, Steve received his BBA from the
University of
Wisconsin
and his MBA from Wharton. A Chartered Financial Analyst, he
split his career between investment management and corporate
financial management before retiring from corporate life in
2002.
A member of
St. Michael’s
Lutheran
Church,
he served for several years on the Candidacy Committee of the
New England Synod of the ELCA. He enjoyed his membership in
the Senior Men’s Club and other local groups. He was an avid
tennis, golf, and bridge player and a lover of reading, words,
and music. Steve was an ardent sports fan and cheered for the
Green Bay Packers, University of Wisconsin Badgers and the
Chicago Cubs. He loved to travel and had been to all seven
continents.
Steve played
an important role in the career path of our executive director
Stacey Hafen. During a CPR course at the chapter in 2001
Stacey informed Steve that she planned to go back to work
since her children were older. Within a few months Steve
called her to see if she was interested in becoming the
director. Stacey has always been grateful for his guidance
and advice during her first year as director.
Those of us
who had the pleasure of knowing him will miss his insight,
wisdom and gentle manner.
Steve’s wife
Joyce died in 1988. He is survived by daughters Barbara Hill
and Sarah Ellig and her husband Daniel. |
