CPR and First Aid require strenuous physical activity and practice on both a partner and a manikin. New CPR standards and training techniques require prolonged kneeling and extended practice of rescue breaths and chest compressions!  If you have a medical condition or disability which could affect your participation in this training, please consult with your physician before registering. Successful skills practice is required for certification.

Adult CPR/AED

The purpose of the Adult CPR/AED course is to prepare individuals to recognize and provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, including performing CPR on an adult and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Certification valid for 1 year.

This course provides certification in First Aid only.  The purpose of this course is to learn how to recognize, respond to and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illness. Certification valid for 3 years. This course DOES NOT meet the State of Connecticut requirements for family and day care staff.  See Connecticut Childcare below.

This course teaches participants how to recognize and provide care for choking, breathing, and cardiac emergencies in infants and children; as well as injury prevention, emergency care, childhood illness and more.  CPR certification valid 1 year. Connecticut Childcare certification valid 3 years. This course meets the State of Connecticut training requirements for family and day care staff.

Recognizing and caring for choking, breathing, and cardiac emergencies for adults, infants, and children.  Two rescuer CPR, use of resuscitation and bag-valve masks. Preventing disease transmission. (Valid 1 yr.)

Babysitter's Training

This course provides students with training in how to care for children in their home - including how to prevent injuries and what to do in an emergency. (Call 755-1137 for information on private group classes.)

Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission

(including Pandemic Flu awareness module)

This course has been developed with guidance from the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to comply with the training component of OSHA’s bloodborne pathogen standard. Certification valid for 1 year. These course offerings also include information and materials useful for preparing for a possible flu pandemic. Call for information.

Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT)
(Required prerequisite for all instructor courses.) This course introduces instructor candidates to the history, structure and activities of the American Red Cross.  Prepares instructor candidates to teach specialty courses to diverse populations and introduces Red Cross policies and procedures.

Community Disaster Education Programs

Preparing for the Unexpected
FREE
This course provides individuals, families, community groups, businesses, and others with information on how to prepare for any kind of disaster, including a terrorist attack; and on how to safely respond to the instructions of local officials during a disaster. Topics covered include: learning what could happen, preparing a disaster plan, assembling a disaster supplies kit, keys to "sheltering-in-place" or evacuating, and basic care for injuries.

Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism: An Overview

This course provides basic information about the issues and safety concerns surrounding a response to a Weapons of Mass Destruction and/or Terrorism (WMD/T) incident. Participants will learn about the skills, abilities, and knowledge needed by disaster workers performing duties in this environment. While it is focused on Red Cross disaster staff; it will also be of value to other agency staff, community leaders, or anyone wishing to learn more about providing disaster relief following a WMD/T incident. Prerequisite: None. (However, "Introduction to Disaster Services" is recommended.)

Shelter Operations 
FREE
This course will prepare you to effectively organize and manage an emergency shelter as a part of a team, so that you can assist in meeting the needs of people displaced from their homes as a result of a disaster. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services and Community Services Overview.

Registration Information
Pre–Registration is required. Registration for all classes is on a first come - first served basis.  Course fees listed are per person and are due at time of registration. You can register in person or through the mail by check, cash, money order, or credit card (Discover, MasterCard, or Visa). Course fees are generally non-refundable. However, if you notify the chapter at least three working days before the course, you may be able to transfer your enrollment to another scheduled course. If a class is canceled or rescheduled, the chapter will make a reasonable effort to notify you in advance. Any refunds issued will be minus textbook/postage charges (if applicable). 

Refunds or transfers will NOT be issued to students who fail to show up for class.

  • The American Red Cross follows Centers of Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for the cleaning and decontamination of manikins. According to the CDC there has never been a documented case of any infectious disease being transmitted through the use of CPR training manikins.

  • To receive course certification, you must attend all sessions and pass all skill tests and written exams. A minimum score of 80% is required on sections of written exams.

  • Courses are held at the office indicated, unless otherwise noted. There will be a lunch break for classes that are scheduled for the entire day.

  • Materials are available in Spanish for selected classes.

Complete the Registration Form and mail it to the appropriate chapter office (Waterbury  for classes at either the Naugatuck location or Waterbury office, or Torrington). Be sure to mark the outside of your envelope "Course Registration."
If you can't print the Registration Form, you may send your name, address, phone number, and desired course title, starting date, and location; along with a check/money order; or your Discover, MasterCard, or Visa credit card data (name of card holder, card number, expiration date, and signature) to the appropriate office.
